This Earth Day, we’re celebrating the meaningful steps Nviro is taking to protect our planet and create cleaner, greener spaces for the communities we serve.

What is Earth Day?

Every year on 22 April, people across the world come together to celebrate Earth Day – a moment to reflect on how we can each play our part in protecting the health of our shared home, Planet Earth.

Since its inception in 1970, Earth Day has raised awareness and inspired global action for environmental protection, engaging over 1 billion people in 193 countries along the way.

How Nviro supports environmental initiatives

At the heart of Nviro’s core values is the emphasis on environmental management. Our ISO:14001-accredited environmental management system helps us to manage our environmental impact, improve efficiency, and ensure regulatory compliance. Over the past 30 years, we’ve been working closely with clients to provide cleaning solutions that protect the environment but does not compromise on providing Clean, Hygienic and Safe environments.

Here are six ways Nviro is helping protect the planet, today and every day.

Vehicles

Over the last few years, we have made significant progress in managing our fleet of vehicles, mainly due to innovations created by the motor industry. Alongside renewing vehicles to the latest Euro 6 engine specifications, thus lowering CO2 and improving MPG we have also been partnered with a company called Lightfoot for the last 3 years.

Lightfoot’s vehicle tracking solution helps deliver major fuel savings, CO2 reductions and improved safety records for fleet vehicles. Using this data helps inform how we interact with the drivers of these vehicles and rewards good driving behaviour.

We are also pleased to say that we have renewed all company cars to plugin hybrid vehicles.

Our current selection includes the Volkswagen Golf PHEV, which benefit from a huge CO2 reduction, reducing previous diesel vehicle emissions from 126g/km to just 6g/km. Regenerative braking harvests kinetic energy that recharges the battery, which also adds to these savings.

Equipment

Choosing the right equipment helps us deliver Clean, Hygienic and Safe spaces for the people who use them. The i‑mop plays an important role in this by cleaning over ten times faster than a traditional mop and bucket, while using far less water. Its efficient design reduces the need for deep cleaning and eases the physical strain on our cleaning colleagues, allowing them to work more comfortably and consistently deliver high‑quality results.

The i‑mop’s reduced water usage also creates a positive impact beyond our sites. By cutting daily consumption from around 40 litres to just nine, each machine enables us, through our partnership with i-team and the Made Blue Foundation, to donate the equivalent amount of clean drinking water to communities in need. In 2024, Nviro’s water savings provided the equivalent of over 467,000 litres of clean water donated annually.

The Made Blue Foundation turns water savings into clean drinking water for communities in need. They fund and build wells, sanitation, and hygiene systems, and commit to monitoring installations for at least ten years. This is vital in regions where over 50% of charity‑installed water pumps in Sub‑Saharan Africa have stopped functioning.

Chemicals

Our main chemical for cleaning is OdorBac. Made from entirely organic materials, OdorBac is completely biodegradable and poses no harm to the environment or aquatic life. It is also food-safe, making it perfect for any environment. It has no hazard phases, requires no COSHH, and its laboratory tests have a kill rate of 99% of bacteria.

Our chemicals are environmentally accredited with the EcoGreen label, and we’ve eliminated harmful chlorine pollutants. The distribution and supply of OdorBac is a closed-loop recycling process, meaning that the plastic containers are reused and made from 100% recycled plastic, along side this we have been working with Odorbac on a new initiative which makes the supply, usage and recycling of the product as a whole 100% sustainable.

Recycling

We always encourage the tracking of contaminated recycling bags, something we carry out to drive continuous improvement. This helps target awareness campaigns in specific locations that are contributing higher levels of general waste and have seen an increase in recycling rates.

We have also partnered with TerraCycle, whose aim is to ‘recycle the unrecyclable’. This has included a cigarette recycling scheme at Chichester College Group.

Sustainable Production

We carefully select suppliers who share our environmental values. Our core paper products are provided through the Metsa Group, whose operation aligns with Nviro by using renewable wood, and they replant 4 trees for every one used.

Using renewable energy, their products are kept in circulation for as long as possible and are continuously reused and repurposed, reducing waste, carbon output, energy and water.

Products

We offer an environmentally sustainable range of consumables products to support our daily activity, which reduces the cost to landfill and promotes green production.

Beyond products, we also strive towards a sustainable place of work and have been involved in several initiatives to deliver social value for our contracts:

  • All of our plastic and compactor sacks are made from recycled materials, so we’ve cut single-use plastics, and we keep packing to a minimum by ordering in bulk.
  • We also carry out community cleaning and volunteering activities as part of our ESG commitments with our clients. Recent examples include jointly refreshing an outdoor learning space at Warren Mead School and supporting local facilities with deep cleans, such as a church and village hall. These initiatives enhance community wellbeing and strengthen our positive environmental and social impact in the communities we serve.
  • At South Hampshire College Group, we’ve introduced table talkers that highlight the importance of putting rubbish in the bin and how this simple action helps keep their spaces Clean, Hygienic and Safe.
  • At Fareham College, we introduced a centralised binning system to cut their landfill significantly.
  • Recently introduced a Blister Pack Recycling scheme at some of our client sites to support these waste products being reused and remade into new products such as furniture.
  • Switched to recycled plastic products such as buckets, floor scrubbers and microfibre cloths. These products contain up to 75% recycled plastic in their production and have saved us from ordering over 897kg of virgin plastic!
  • We participate in Bunzl’s Closed Loop Recycling programme, which sees OdorBac containers returned to Bunzl for reuse.
  • On our client sites with washing machines, we have introduced Leaf Laundry Detergent Sheets, a low‑waste alternative to traditional detergent.
  • We have introduced our Recycling Roadshow offering and have trialled this across Hampshire libraries and schools and colleges across Surrey and Hampshire. This is to actively encourage people to understand recycling and why it’s important to do.

We’re always trialling new products and exploring the latest innovations because finding better ways to care for our clients, communities and the planet is at the heart of what we do.

Every day should be Earth Day

Earth Day reminds us to pause and reflect, but protecting the planet is something we can all do every day. By making small, thoughtful choices, we can reduce our impact, support healthier communities and safeguard our environment for future generations.

At Nviro, we’re proud to play our part in creating cleaner, greener and safer spaces across the Southeast. Because, as Mike Berners‑Lee (Carbon footprint expert) reminds us, there is no Planet B.
