6 things we do at Nviro to protect the environment

01 January 2022 Category: Company News Environmental

We celebrate Earth Day on 22 April every year and on that occasion, we should remind ourselves how each of us can help to keep our planet safe and healthy. After all, this is the only planet where we can live and therefore why wouldn’t we want to contribute to keeping it green? This annual event is created to celebrate our planet’s environment and to raise awareness.

Nviro offer an outstanding customer experience, whilst being kind to the environment. Our ISO:14001 accredited environmental management system, helps us make more efficient use of resources. We pride ourselves in helping to protect the environment, and we have been working closely with clients and customers over the past 30 years to offer solutions.

So, here are 6 things we do at Nviro to help protect the environment.

Vehicles

Firstly, our Fleet Innovations. Alongside renewing vehicles to the new Euro 6 engine specification, thus lowering CO2 and improving MPG we have also partnered with Lightfoot. Lightfoot’s vehicle tracking solution helps deliver major fuel savings, CO2 reduction and improved safety records for fleet vehicles. Using Littlefoot is expected to , reduce CO2 by 15% and saves up to 15% on fuel. We are also pleased to say that we have deployed the first hybrid vehicles to our Service team in Hampshire. The Kia Zceed PHEVs benefit from a huge CO2 reduction, reducing emissions from 126 to just 38g/km. Regenerative braking harvests kinetic energy that recharges the battery, saving on fuel and emissions.

Equipment

Secondly, our equipment. We use equipment such as the i-mop, which is over 10 times faster than a traditional mop and bucket, its effectiveness reduces the need for deep cleaning and the physical strain on our people. Reducing water usage down from 40 litres daily to just 9, the equivalent 9 litres used daily by each i-mop are donated to those in need thanks to our partnership with i-team and the Made Blue Foundation. This foundation works with charities like the Red Cross and Amref, constructing water wells and sanitation facilities in developing countries.

Chemicals

Our top chemical for cleaning is Odor Bac. Made from entirely organic materials, Odor Bac is completely biodegradable and poses no harm to the environment or aquatic life. On top of that it’s food-safe, making it perfect for any environment. It has no hazard phases, requires no COSHH and it’s laboratory- tested to have a kill rate of 99.99% on human coronaviruses when diluted at a ratio of 1:1. Our chemicals are environmentally accredited with the eco green label, and we’ve eliminated harmful chlorine pollutants. The distribution and supply of Odor Bac is a closed loop recycling process, meaning that the plastic containers are re-used and made from 100% recycled plastic.

Recycling

We always encourage the tracking of contaminated recycling bags, something we carry out at the University of East London to drive continuous improvement. This helps target awareness campaigns in specific locations that are contributing higher levels of general waste and has seen an increase in recycling rates. we’ve also partnered with TerraCycle, whose aim is to ‘recycle the unrecyclable’. This has included a cigarette recycling scheme at Chichester College Group and we’re exploring the gum recycling option too.

Sustainable Production

Our core paper products are provided through the Metsa Group, whose operation align with Nviro by using renewable wood and they replant 4 trees for every one used. Using renewable energy, their products are kept in circulation for as long as possible and are continuously reused and repurposed, reducing waste, carbon output, energy and water. All of our plastic and compactor sacks are made from recycled materials, so we’ve cut single-use plastics, and we keep packing to a minimum by ordering in bulk.

Products

We offer an environmentally sustainable range of consumables products to support our daily activity, which reduces cost to landfill and promotes green production.

We also strive towards a sustainable place of work and have been involved in several initiatives to deliver social value for our contracts:

  • We took part in a Brighton & Hove City Council beach clean! We worked with the Council to protect the natural environment and the biosphere.
  • At the University of East London, we do a monthly environmental initiative to raise awareness across the campus.
  • At Chichester College Group, we’ve sponsored prizes for ‘Respect Your Environment Week’ and offer a range of environmentally friendly consumables.
  • At Fareham College, we introduced a centralised binning system to cut their landfill significantly.

Earth Day is an important day, and we should all take time out of our busy lives to consider the impact that we have on the environment and come up with ways in which we can help minimise these impacts, and as a result, we can all live a happier, more healthier life and protect our planet.
